Unit 3: Dinosaurs and Fossils

Hello 4 Charity,

We've looked at how fossils are formed earlier in class. Now, let's take look at a short video http://dsc.discovery.com/convergence/dinosaurplanet/video/video.html

What do you think causes dinosaurs to become extinct?

Take a look at the following videos about frogs.
http://www.kiddyhouse.com/Themes/frogs/lifecycle.html
http://www.ipcc.ie/lifecycle.html
http://www.tooter4kids.com/Frogs/life_cycle_of_frogs.htm

After you have viewed the videos, post a comment to this blog entry on
(1) 3 things you learnt about frogs
(2) 2 facts about frogs that you find interesting
(3) 1 question about frogs that you would like answered

(1) the 3 things i learnt about frogs are

Frogs lay their eggs in water or wet places

After about five weeks, the tadpole begins to change

Eleven weeks after the egg was laid, a fully developed frog with lungs, legs, and no tail emerges from the water. This frog will live mostly on land, with occasional swims. The tiny frogs begin to eat insects and worms

(2) the 2 facts about frogs that i find interesting are

the frog is covered with jelly and their tail are showing up

(1)The Egg

Frogs lay their eggs in water or wet places. A floating clump of eggs is called frog spawn.
The large and slippery mass of eggs are too big to be eaten. This is nature's way of protecting them. But, the smaller clumps of eggs will be eaten by the creatures living near or in the pond.
The egg begins as a single cell. Several thousand are sometimes laid at once. It becomes surrounded by a jellylike covering, which protects the egg. The female may or may not stay with the eggs to take care of the young after she has laid them. The egg slowly develops. But, only a few develop into adults. Ducks, fish, insects, and other water creatures eat the eggs.
(2)The Tadpole
After its 21 day development period, the embryo leaves its jelly shell, and attaches itself to a weed in the water. This quickly becomes a tadpole, a baby frog. The tadpoles grow until they are big enough to break free into the water. This can take from 3 days to 3 weeks, depending on what kind of frog they will become. They eat very small plants that stick to larger plants in the water. These tiny plants are called algae. The tadpole has a long tail, and lives in the water. It is extremely vulnerable, and must rely on its camouflage to protect it.

(3)The Frog
Eleven weeks after the egg was laid, a fully developed frog with lungs, legs, and no tail emerges from the water. This frog will live mostly on land, with occasional swims. The tiny frogs begin to eat insects and worms. Eventually, it will find a mate. The way this is done varies depending on the species. The female lays the eggs, the male fertilizes them, and the whole process begins again.

{1} 1 I learnt that

A frog usually has smooth, moist, skin, is slimy and jumps, and spends most of their lives in or near water. A toad tends to be dry, warty-looking a walks, and spends more time living on land.

2 And not all species of frog protect themselves the same way. Some frogs have poison glands in their skin. The skin secretes the liquid and covers the body with the poison.

3 And Frogs have many enemies. Foxes, bats, rats, birds, fish, raccoons, turtles, snakes, and humans are a frog's enemy.

{2} The 2 facts about frogs that I find interesting 1.are Frogs have fairly good eyesight, which helps them in capturing food and avoiding any enemies. A frog's eyes bulge out so he can see in almost any direction. and 2. frogs are cold - blooded. This means that their inside body temperatures are about the same as the temperature outside. Their skin absorbs water into their body so they don't have to drink water in order to survive. Frogs have very strong legs for leaping great distances.

{3} I would like to find out that How long do Frogs live?

Ilearnt that: Frogs lay their eggs on wet places.

I learnt that: The outer covering of the frogs egg is made out of jelly.

The two facts that i found interesting are:
(1) The single cell in the egg eventually splits into two. These two split making four cells, and so on. Eventually, there are many cells in the egg.
(2) After its 21 day development period, the embryo leaves its jelly shell, and attaches itself to a weed in the water. This quickly becomes a tadpole, a baby frog.

I would like to find out:
(1) why are forgs green?
(2) Why do froegs jump high?

(1)Frogs have many enemies. Foxes, bats, rats, birds, fish, raccoons, turtles, snakes, and humans are a frog's enemy. But human beings are the worst! We destroy their homes and breeding places by replacing natural areas with cities, homes, and farms, We also pollute and therefore poison the water in which frogs live.

(2)The Frog
Eleven weeks after the egg was laid, a fully developed frog with lungs, legs, and no tail emerges from the water. This frog will live mostly on land, with occasional swims.
